YOUR YEAR OF ADVENTURE AT LOCH LOMOND

boarding the boat
WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO GO THIS YEAR?
There’s something special about experiencing Loch Lomond from the water. A boat trip doesn’t just take you across the loch – it opens up a whole range of landscapes, walks, wildlife and memorable moments that are hard to reach any other way. Here are some of the highlights of Loch Lomond that we think you'll like this year.

INCHCAILLOCH ISLAND

WHEN THE ISLAND TURNS BLUE
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to explore Loch Lomond. In May, the island of Inchcailloch comes alive with a carpet of bluebells, creating a stunning burst of colour beneath the ancient oak woodland. Arriving by boat feels especially magical, with deer often spotted along the water’s edge. Paths weave around the island and its perfect for families with little ones, with its sandy beach and shallow waters to paddle in.

ICONIC WALKS STRAIGHT FROM THE BOAT
One of the joys of cruising Loch Lomond is being able to step off the boat and straight into some of Scotland’s most iconic walks.

INVERSNAID, LOCH LOMOND

The West Highland Way walk, which hugs the loch shore and accesible from either Inversnaid or Rowardennan, is also putting on a show in spring. With the trees bursting with new green foliage, wildflowers and paths often quieter it makes this a perfect time for combining a boat trip with one of Scotland’s most  beautiful walks (in our opinion!)

CONIC HILL

A favourite with visitors, Conic Hill offers breathtaking views over the Highland Boundary Fault and the islands of Loch Lomond. Arriving by boat from Luss adds an extra sense of adventure to this classic walk .

*BALMAHA EXPLORER CRUISE*

BHEIN DUBH - LUSS

The pretty conservation village of Luss is an ideal starting point for gentle strolls or longer hill walks. From lochside paths to hills with incredible views, it’s a wonderful place to explore at your own pace before enjoying lunch.

ARKLET FALLS

Inversnaid – A real highlight for nature lovers. From here you can walk sections of the West Highland Way and discover the dramatic Arklet Falls, as well as a walk through the RSPB nature trail with temperate rainforest, rich with mosses and ferns, waterfalls and beaches.

BEN LOMOND

Taking a boat trip to the foot of Ben Lomond and walking up to the summit is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Loch Lomond and its most famous mountain. Travelling by boat to Rowardennan sets the tone for the day, offering stunning views across the loch before stepping ashore at Rowardennan, the gateway to Ben Lomond. From here, the well-defined path leads you up Scotland’s most southerly Munro, with ever-changing views unfolding as you climb. Reaching the summit is a magical moment, with panoramic views stretching across the loch, the Highlands and beyond — a perfect combination of a fabulous boat trip and classic Scottish hillwalking.

*BEN LOMOND HIKE CRUISE*

OSPREY LOCH LOMOND

A LIVING LOCH - WILDLIFE OF LOCH LOMOND
Loch Lomond is full of wildlife and a boat trip offers a front-row seat. One of the most exciting sights of the year is the return of the Osprey, arriving back from Africa in spring to its various nest sites around the loch. Watching these impressive birds fish and soar above the water is an unforgettable experience.
You may also spot deer along the shoreline, wild mountain goats, a variety of water birds, White tailed eagles and Golden Eagles. Oh yes and you may even spot a wallaby!

LOCH LOMOND WATERBUS
Our Waterbus service offers a simple and scenic way to travel across Loch Lomond, with one-way sailings linking key lochside villages and walking routes. It’s ideal for walkers and cyclists allowing you to plan a route in one direction and return by boat while enjoying stunning views along the way. Whether you’re tackling part of the West Highland Way or just exploring the loch without the car, the Waterbus makes getting around Loch Lomond easy and enjoyable.

DID YOU KNOW that all our skippers give a live commentary on our cruises? So as well as taking you to the most amazing locations around the loch, they’ll tell you the history of the area, the wildlife you might spot and there might even be the odd wee joke or two thrown in! Here’s Skipper Archie showing us how it’s done.

We welcomed @scotlands_stories on board with us last week and here’s their story of their time on Inchcailloch Island…..‘ How can I get a picture with this view of Loch Lomond?’ I hear you ask! Well, while everybody else is on the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond, you're going to need to get yourself to Inchcailloch, one of the 22 islands in the middle. Molly and I took the scenic journey by booking a trip with @cruiselochlomond which left from the wee village of Luss on the west bank. The trip took a wee tour around the loch with expert commentary on some of the other islands along the way. No wallabies to be seen, but the Ospreys were out and about! Inchcailloch has been on my bucketlist for a while and it didn't disappoint, especially on a day like this. It's not a huge island, but there's still stories to discover. Buried in the undergrowth, but easy to find, you'll come across a ruined church and a jumble of old gravestones. This is the church of St Kentigerna, the mother of St Fillan who allegedly established a little chapel on this site in the 8th century. Inchcailloch is said to be named after her, translating as the island of the old woman or cowled woman meaning a nun! Amazing to think this was once a parish church and locals would row across the loch every Sunday up until 1621, true dedication. If you can read through the moss then you'll find a lot of Macfarlanes and Macgregors buried here, including Rob Roy's uncle once the Macgregor Clan Chief. After a couple hours of wandering the forest tracks and climbing to the summit of this little hill for the panorama, we still had an hour before Cruise Loch Lomond came to get us. Plenty of time for a wee dip in the shallow bay at Port Brawn, much needed for both Molly and I to cool off. This was easily up there with one of the most enjoyable things I've done all year and hopefully it's convinced you to get out there the next time you're visiting Loch Lomond and explore! It can get busy so book ahead and you can look through a range of boat trips like this through the @stirlingalive website - www.yourstirling.com I reckon Molly would agree that this summer, happiness is a bookable experience!
