Enjoy a cruise to the beautiful village of Luss (once known as Clachan Dhu) on the western shore of Loch Lomond. A live informative commentary on the history of the Loch and the surrounding area will be given during the crossing. Disembark for a couple of hours for a walk or cycle; to picnic or enjoy lunch and refreshments in one of a choice of local hotels and restaurants. The village is steeped in history with evidence of a settlement existing since the 1300s.

In the 1800s local landowners, the Colquhoun’s, were responsible for the Luss we know today, by rebuilding much of the village, in part, to house workers for the nearby slate quarries.

There has been a church on the present site since 510 AD. Luss Parish church as it stands was built in 1875 by the Colquhouns. The church is quite unique, with a fascinating graveyard (look out for the 11th century Viking hogback grave) and an interior well worth exploring. In the village there is a Pilgrimage Centre giving information on the history of the village.

The ancient village and its surroundings are easily explored on foot and the following walks are easily accessed in the heart of the National Park:

  • Lochside Path: A 15 minute gentle stroll through the village and along the shore with great views of the Loch & the surrounding hills .
  • Riverside Path: A 30 minute circular path along the banks of Luss Water and suitable for all.
  • Slate Quarry Path: A 30 minute (slightly more strenuous) walk up into the green hills, passing one of the old mills and the slate quarry.
  • Luss Heritage Path: An hour long walk for the more serious walker. Explore the full circuit of the village and the river paths and enjoy stunning views of Loch Lomond and the surrounding countryside.

The New Visitor Centre
The New Visitor Centre offers visitor interpretation & information. Spend some time in the Heritage Room, and the Sound & Light Exhibition in the church. An interesting film on Loch Lomond & the islands runs continuously. See the Handloom Weave make the St Kessog tartan & have a walk around the Glebe and the kessog Trail.
