Enjoy a cruise to the beautiful village of Luss (once known as Clachan Dhu) on the western shore of Loch Lomond. A live informative commentary on the history of the Loch and the surrounding area will be given during the crossing. Disembark for a couple of hours for a walk or cycle; to picnic or enjoy lunch and refreshments in one of a choice of local hotels and restaurants. The village is steeped in history with evidence of a settlement existing since the 1300s.
In the 1800s local landowners, the Colquhoun’s, were responsible for the Luss we know today, by rebuilding much of the village, in part, to house workers for the nearby slate quarries.
There has been a church on the present site since 510 AD. Luss Parish church as it stands was built in 1875 by the Colquhouns. The church is quite unique, with a fascinating graveyard (look out for the 11th century Viking hogback grave) and an interior well worth exploring. In the village there is a Pilgrimage Centre giving information on the history of the village.
The ancient village and its surroundings are easily explored on foot and the following walks are easily accessed in the heart of the National Park:
